Federal elections
In a federal election all Australian citizens 18 years and over who are enrolled to vote must vote for people to represent their state or territory in the Senate.
The winners of the vote in each state and territory become senators.
Every 3 years, half the state senators and all the territory senators must stand for re-election, unless there is a double dissolution.
Senators represent the interests and concerns of people in their state or territory.
Australia has 6 states and 2 territories
Various number of voters live in each.
There are 76 senators
12 senators for each state and 2 for each territory.
Senate terms
State senators are elected for 6 years. Territory senators are elected for 3 years.
