Description

A graphic representing all the different types of people who are members of the Australian Parliament.

Good question about our political leaders, Joelle!. The leaders of the political parties in the Australian Parliament are elected in 2 main ways:

In some political parties, such as the Liberal Party of Australia, the parliamentary members of the party vote to elect the leader. Parliamentary members are senators and members of the House of Representatives.

In other political parties, like the Australian Labor Party, both parliamentary members and non-parliamentary members of the party get a say in choosing the leader of their party.
