What is federation?
Federation describes the creation of Australia as a nation. On 1 January 1901, the 6 British colonies – New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia – joined together to become states of Australia. They gave up some of their powers and responsibilities to the newly formed federal – national – Parliament. The new nation was known as the Commonwealth of Australia.
