What minister is responsible for making sure everyone knows about new laws?
The minister responsible for a new law works with their department to make sure everyone knows about it.
Ministers are members of the government who have responsibility for an area of how Australia is run. This area of responsibility is known as a portfolio. Some examples of ministerial portfolios include health, finance, education, environment and foreign affairs.
When Parliament makes a new law or makes changes to an existing one, the relevant minister and their department are responsible for putting the law into action and making the public aware of it. For example, if a new law is created to reduce plastic waste, the Minister for the Environment might:
- issue a media release
- direct the Department of Environment to start a public awareness campaign to let people know their new responsibilities to reduce plastic under the law
- meet with environmental organisations, community groups and other stakeholders to ensure everyone understands what they need to do to reduce plastic waste
- make sure the Department's official website has detailed explanations and resources.
