Who is the Leader of the House and what do they do?

The Leader of the House is a member of the government in the House of Representatives whose job is to make sure the government’s bills – proposed laws – and other business are introduced and pass smoothly through the House. The Leader of the House also:

  • Schedules debates and manages the number of speakers for each debate.
  • Deals with urgent business in the House.
  • Plans government tactics.
  • Works with the Prime Minister, party whip, clerks and the Manager of Opposition Business in the House to develop and manage the Daily Program.

In the Senate, the Manager of Government Business in the Senate works with the Manager of Opposition Business in the Senate, party leaders and other senators to develop and manage the Senate Notice Paper.
